Most clocks will have in the middle a centre post and centre wheel pinion. Making contact with the pinion of the centre post is a wheel which the sprng or weight drives. This is the great wheel. Connecting with the centre wheel is the third wheel pinion. Connecting with the third wheel is the escape wheel pinion. So there is four wheels, three of which have pinions. Only one, the third wheel, is usually known by its number. If you want to number them - they would be-
Great Wheel = first wheel
Centre Wheel = second wheel
Third Wheel = third wheel
Escape Wheel = fourth wheel
Only the great wheel has no pinion.
